Hamilton, Bermuda – April 17th 2009 — Cable Co. Ltd., a Bermudian telecommunications company, announced that its Challenger cable system is fully operational. Cable Co. received a license to build and operate a cable on December 17, 2007, from the then Ministry of Energy, Telecommunications and E-Commerce. Sheila Lines, CEO of KeyTech Limited, primary shareholder and investor in Cable Co. Ltd., commented, “We’re thrilled to add Challenger capacity to the international facilities available to Bermuda. This was a complex project with a number of moving parts including licensing in Bermuda and the USA, and construction elements. Working with key partners including the Ministry of Telecommunications, BTC, Verizon, Alcatel, North Rock Communications and Transact, our team put all the pieces together to successfully complete the project.”
Alcatel were engaged to construct Challenger and completed the project on budget and ahead of schedule. Challenger spans 1,445 km, linking Bermuda to the United States. Designed with an initial capacity of 20 Gbits, the new network can be scaled up to 320 Gbits. BTC provide land-based facilities in Bermuda and Verizon land-based facilities in the U.S. Physical construction was completed in December 2008, with further commissioning and licensing activity with both the FCC and the Bermuda government completed during the first quarter of 2009.
Three Bermuda companies, KeyTech Limited, North Rock Communications and Transact Limited, partnered on the license application and product specifications throughout the planning and construction phase.
Logic Communications, a subsidiary of KeyTech Limited, North Rock Communications and Transact Limited all now utilize Challenger for international bandwidth needs enabling them to better serve Bermuda’s business and residential customers.
Vicki Coelho, General Manager of North Rock Communications Ltd. said, “North Rock Communications is pleased to be a partner with Cable Co. and have capacity on the Challenger cable system. As a result of capacity over Challenger, North Rock customers have seen increases of up to four times their previous speed. In this time of economic uncertainty North Rock is thrilled to be able to purchase bandwidth from a Bermudian owned and operated cßompany. For the first time profits from an undersea cable will be reinvested in the local economy, which will benefit us all. Moving forward we believe that the trend of increased bandwidth available to Bermudians will continue, allowing for new products and services, as well as a richer Internet experience.”
Paul Coleman, VP Marketing of Logic Communications said, “Logic is excited about Challenger and the positive impact it is having on Logic customers. Challenger has enabled Logic customers to stream video from sites like YouTube and Facebook, to watch TV shows and sporting events, and have fantastic gaming experiences. As technology perpetually advances and customer needs grow too, Logic can depend on Bermuda’s own cable system – Challenger – to keep pace. Challenger strengthens Logic’s network by providing route redundancy to the rest of the world. Challenger is one of many links Logic uses to ensure data and voice traffic going to-and-from the Island always reaches its destination quickly and efficiently. Logic’s new capacity on Challenger makes the Logic network even more reliable.”
Bill Dickinson, General Manager for FKB Transact said, “FKB Transact partnered with Challenger earlier this year when the company obtained additional off-island capacity and are happy to report that the system was provisioned on time and has been extremely reliable. Having more options available to bandwidth allows for greater redundancy that we are able to offer all Bermudian businesses and consumers in addition to being able to offer increased speeds that were not previously available. Given our geographic location, the need for reliable, redundant capacity is an absolute necessity and utilizing the Challenger Cable System we are able to meet those needs.”
Cable Co. offers wholesale services to all Bermudian licensed carriers, enhancing system redundancy and increased competition in international cable facilities and offering higher bandwidth products to carriers who do not own cable facilities themselves. With three separate independently operated cable operators serving the island, Bermuda stands out as a jurisdiction in terms of connectivity.
With Challenger completing in late 2008 amongst increasingly uncertain global economic conditions, North Rock and Transact elected not to exercise options to participate in equity ownership and Cable Co. remains owned by KeyTech Limited. Sheila Lines said, “Irrespective of equity ownership, we continue to work closely with North Rock and Transact in the utilization of Challenger’s capacity. We work with all carriers on an open and non-discriminatory basis and we welcome the prospect of expanding Challenger’s customer base to additional carriers. At KeyTech we are very excited to be managing our own international facilities for the first time in our 120-year history. The international cable is a long-term investment that will enable us to fuel our existing on-island networks with the data capacity customers require today and will require tomorrow.”
